Helloo! I'm Emily. I come from a fairly interesting family, despite our banal namesake of "Smith". I live on a bit of a secluded farm, where we have a pretty amazing garden, a herd of goats, a flock of chickens, and a ridiculous amount of sewing machines.. ehm, some of my hobbies include biking&hiking, watercolor painting, knitting scarves, and occasionally trying to boogie down (generally without much success). I work @ Publix, so that's inevitably where you will find me most of this summer. I'm taking this class because I genuinely have an interest in literature, and wish to one day be a qualified book-worm. or something like that. I've gotten 2/3 of the books- Ethan Frome and Heart of Darkness, and I'm actually looking forward to reading both of them.

Hi Emily! Does your brother still work at Publix too? Do you guys get along? I'd like to know more about the "qualified bookworm" thing... if only it paid an annual salary;-)
Welcome to the class ;D

Hah, actually three of my four brothers work at Publix, it has sort of become a progressive family take-over... But, i'm sure you are referring to Patrick/Henry, who indeed still works there too. We used to fight all the time, mainly because he would always steal my food and such, hah, but now that we are older we get along pretty well. I've found that we have a lot more in common than I ever realized and we can actually hold interesting and meaningful conversation with one another now, which is nice! In regards to becoming a qualified bookworm, I just want to one day be able to read for fun on a regular basis, because right now in my life I feel like I only read due to obligations, rather than pure pleasure, simply because of time restraints... but one day, I shall!

You won't have that full pleasure reading time for awhile... probably until you have a full time job - no more school... and that includes grad school! BUT, I've found that sometimes you just have to make time for it. That's why I listen to books on my iPod when I drive and my only pleasure reading (literally) is when I'm on my elliptical machine in the mornings for about a half hour. It's kind of a motivator to work out actually;-)
Yeah, how's Patrick/Henry doing? It's nice you get along now. Siblings can be invaluable as an adult. I get along very well with my sister and brother and it's definitely something to be treasured! What are the ages of your other three brothers? Younger/older? Is it just you five kids or do you have any sisters? Big family;-)

Patrick/Henry is doing pretty amazing. He recently tricked out his bicycle with a motor, enabling it to reach speads of up to 30 mph and has been riding that around town.. Apparently it gets 150 miles to a gallon, so it's his way of saving money and the environment as well! Haha, he's quite the individual. As for my other siblings, I have one more older brother, Alex, who is about to turn 21, and two younger brothers- Robert and Roy, 16 and 14 respectively. No sisters, but that's fine by me. We do have a big family, and I'm pretty grateful for that Also, I went to the library today and checked out two audiobooks so I can upload them to my ipod and start "ear-reading"! Pretty exciting.

Audiobooks are awesome! I started with CDs from the library in my car - but have now upgraded to audible.com... they have a really kool program - for $22 a month, I get two audiobook downloads that goes straight into iTunes and then my iPod ;D It's definitely worth it to me b/c I use it and I would never buy audiobooks b/c they're so freakin' expensive! Which ones did you get? I've learned that some things are better listened to, while others are definitely meant to be read. It also depends on who narrates them too. I kinda like it when the authors actually narrates their own - particularly when it's a memoir.
